Okay.there was no way either through telnet or through the web interface to configure the parallel port. Generally, parallel ports provide enough information for the computer (or the print server, in this case) to guess what exactly is connected to the port. Maybe the server can detect whether there's nothing attached to the parallel port or whether there's a cable or even a printer present. If the trick does not work when the printer cable is pulled out of the print servers parallel port, re-attach it, pull the other plug out (the one sitting in a connector of the printer) and try again. Unfortunately, the chapter does not tell us what exactly can be seen and changed in this web interface.Īnother tricky idea: If you disconnect the printer from the server and then let the installation program look for it again, maybe it will allow you to set some options, since it doesn't find a printer.

Perhaps that would help, but unfortunately, there seems to be no older Jetdirect/Jetadmin software available (there seemed to be a version 8 or 10 available yesterday, however, but I can't find it anymore), as you found out already. There were one or two other options as well, e.g., something with and without NACK. Older Jetadmin or Jetdirect software apparently allowed the user to set this. The newer Jetdirect or Jetadmin software seems to automatically set the printer port's configuration, including but not limited to this standard/bidirectional/ECP thing. However, I found out that it can act as a standard parallel port and as a bidirectional printer port as well. If you magnify that incredibly, you can read a line there saying that the parallel port (in this example) is configured as an ECP port. I guess it's seeing a completely dark visibility gem from where it is located. It is hidden very well in the Troubleshooting chapter. They call it "Selecting a Configuration page PDL". All I see is it saying to push the button to print a test page.It's on page 63 ("5-63", meaning chapter 5, page 63) of "HP Jetdirect Print Server 170X Installation and Configuration".

Somehow, though, the printer is not detected. The switch works (the computer can access the internet through it).
So to recap: the printer and its parallel cable work. At one point, it searches for printers and finds the one I'm attempting to use, so apparently it can see through the print server to the printer, which confuses me even more.

HP has obsolesced the original software and instead provides an installer which lets you choose the driver and printer to install. I reset the server to factory defaults, reinstalled the software, put a static IP in the same network on the computer and attempted to ping and telnet to it, but both fail (telnet at least is supposed to let you in so you can configure the server). I've tried a CAT5 cable that I know is working, and there was no change. A different interface produced the same results. On the switch, only the interface's green light comes on the orange one does not (so no data flow, correct?). There's only one light on the server's Ethernet interface as opposed to two, and it remains lit as well (HP's website says it should). The status light comes on as it's supposed to, though I've never seen the activity light come on. There are two lights on the front a status light and an activity light. And the other companies didn't leave any network documentation behind either.Īnyway, I can print if I connect the printer directly to one of the computers, so I know the printer and the parallel cable work.
